Small Business Taxes

If you are like me, your small business is a “sub-s” corporation, where the profits and losses flow through to your personal tax returns. Because of that I’ve filed an extension for my business, and now my personal return must wait until I’m done with the business.

Don’t you just love tax season? :-)

Sales Software

As a follow-up to my post on time tracking software, I’m also releasing a web-based sales force automation / customer relationship management software application under the Affero GPL v3 license.

Its called “Sales Reports” and I’d appreciate it if you’d take a look when you have the time. Thanks!

Time Tracking

I’m working on another open source project called Infonomix which can be used for managing projects, as well as tracking time and attendance - something a lot of small businesses need:

Bookkeeping

Even though I am always trying to keep my books in order, I have a really hard time doing so. I’ve even written an open source accounting package, PBooks, to help me, but its still hard to keep up.

I think a lot of small business owners attempt to do their books themselves, but end up rightly doing what they do best, running their business, instead of properly doing their books. I know that well because thats what I end up doing!

My goal is to get PBooks to the point where an average bookkeeper will be able to use it to balance books, and I’ll hire one to do our books for us using it. I guess that’s a goal for 2008!

Payroll

Small businesses might make the mistake of just paying cash to the owners as their salary or wages, but to comply with local and federal employment laws, you really need to deduct income, social security, and medicare taxes. This can be a complicated thing to do so for the price it is much easier to have a payroll company take care of it.
